That was very useful and pleasure reading. I am one such soon-to-be-uprooted person going to Chennai as a 'single' on transfer leaving my family back in Calcutta. Atleast for 3 years. I am frantically searching the web to get any sort of clue to what sort of place will it be, single room accomodation-where and for how much, etc. My office will be at Nungambakkam. Better if I can get a single room accomodation around at max 5K/month. Any ideas? I work with Central Govt. Male. Bengali. Non-veg.

I'm from Bangalore, studied in Trichy and have been a frequent visitor to Chennai. We have had plenty of students from Chennai in our college and they are some of the brightest, most broadminded (and fun) people I've met. They may not be representative of the entire population, but which metro does not have its share of crazy natives who want everybody but them out of their great city? Mumbai has the Shiv Sena and Bangalore has the Kannada Rakshana Vedike or some such; google it. Chennai does not have Bangalore's traffic nor its pollution. While I love Bangalore (and its great weather, which Chennai most definitely does not share) and would prefer to settle down in Bangalore any day, I still think Chennai's a great city, with a nice mix of the old and the new.

Like it's said, a North Indian will expect even a cabbie in New York and London to answer in Hindi and a restaurant in Paris and Moscow to serve him dal-roti. That's the level of narrow-mindedness and you pretty much seem to fall in that category, besides populating a category of racist bigots.
Secondly, the refusal of the North to assimilate English is the reason why jobs moved southward. Since you wanted a posh, white-collar job, you had to come here. I doubt if the Bimaru states would have given you such a job.
Btw, you know where Halloween is celebrated? Then, you should know where Holi is celebrated too. As long as nobody stops you from celebrating with your folks, you can force anyone else.
Seeing sense is difficult. Else this post would not have been there!

"The very same experience as traveling by bus. In addition, you will have to first get to the nearest local station to catch your train, which could be pretty far away."

As if in other cities, the stations come to you. I think it's common sense that we can't have a station every 250m for His Majesty? Even in Bombay, stations are far apart, in fact farther than Chennai. The local is the best option for places served by one. If you insist on using it for a place that is not served by a station, then well, that's a poor reflection of your sense.

My God!!
Like the person pointed out above it is indeed a narrow minded point of view.. If you are unashamed about sounding biased you have done a very good job.. but if you would like to sound more like someone who's trying to just make observations you better tone down the sarcasm and loathing.. Its the very same disgust of Tamil culture I see throughouit internet blogs by North Indians who want to keep their chennai jobs but feel emasculated by not being not part of a rich forward thinking and proud culture..

I suppose you could have included a sentence about the verses that the valluvan wrote - It is the second most translated book next only to the Bible.
If you can't understand greatness, leave it alone - no point degrading it other than making a fool of one's own self.
I am not sure if there is such a word called hard core Tamilians. Tamil is not a religion, it is just a language and Tamilians are people just like people in other states who happen to speak in their mother tounges.
If you can't appreciate diversity, then why travel and write rubbish survival tips.
Pack up, go home and live in places where everything is Hindi and dal and roti and where you can ogle at 'fair' skinned maidens who don't have yellow paste smeared all over them.
